Government and Cikarang Listrindo Collaboration to Address Air Pollution
Public News|September 22, 2023
22 September 2023 - Air pollution, a major concern for the Jakarta Greater Area (Jabodetabek) community, has prompted a swift response from the government. PT Cikarang Listrindo Tbk (IDX: POWR), a power generation company that prioritizes Environment Social Governance (ESG) aspects in its operations, has always ensured that its operations comply with government regulations and directives.
The Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia, a state institution with the authority to oversee the provision of public services, including those provided by private entities, has also been responsive in assisting the government in monitoring this issue. On August 31, 2023, the Ombudsman RI team, led by Hery Susanto, along with his team, conducted a thorough visit and inspection of the Coal-Fired Power Plant (CFPP) Babelan owned by the Company.
In addition to the Ombudsman's visit, PLTU Babelan also received visits from other relevant institutions. The Company was represented by the Station Manager of CFPP Babelan, Duriman Efendi, and the management of PT Cikarang Listrindo Tbk during each visit.
The Company provided a detailed explanation of the operational and technology aspects of CFPP Babelan, as well as the innovations implemented to ensure that emissions remain below the specified standards. This included an explanation of effective environmental control facilities in the power plant, including the use of Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology from Finland, which separates most solid particles from the exhaust gas stream and collects these particles using an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP).
With this technology, more than 99.5 percent of particulate pollution is successfully separated from the exhaust gas stream. Coal ash in the form of fly ash and bottom ash (FABA), which are residual solid particles from the coal combustion process, is mostly reused as raw material for cement production. The Company is committed to ensuring that 100 percent of the produced FABA is reused.
Furthermore, emissions from CFPP Babelan are continuously monitored through the Company's investment in the Continuous Environment Monitoring System (CEMS) technology installed at each emission point of the CFPP. CEMS is integrated with the Continuous Industrial Emission Monitoring Information System (SISPEK), which can be accessed by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) at any time.
This demonstrates the Company's commitment to transparency and professionalism in managing the Babelan power plant. The emissions of SO2, NO2, and particulate matter from CFPP Babelan during the first half of 2023 were, respectively, <163 mg/Nm3, <181 mg/Nm3, and <32 mg/Nm3.
Based on the analysis of these emissions, the Company emission is well below the quality standards set by KLHK under the Minister of Environmental Regulation No. 15/2019. The positive response from the Ombudsman's visit has given the Company encouragement to continue its positive steps.
Cikarang Listrindo always maintains close collaboration with the central government and local government in efforts to control air pollution. "This is a concrete evidence of Cikarang Listrindo's seriousness and dedication in conducting power generation by considering all aspects, especially the environmental aspect," said Duriman.
CFPP Babelan Cikarang Listrindo will continue to uphold its commitment to environmental conservation and even improve the quality of its operations by targeting a Green PROPER achievement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) by 2025. Meanwhile, GSPP Jababeka will continue to maintain the Green PROPER achievement received in 2022.
CFPP Babelan is expected to serve as an inspiration in the energy industry that prioritizes sustainability and environmental protection.
